Later that year in September, Bangladesh created history in cricketing history by triumphing over Pakistan, a team of much higher stature in a Test Series for the first time ever. And this 2-0 victory was not just an on-field triumph but was an assertion of Bangladesh’s emergence as a competitive cricketing nation.
This historic series was, however, owned by the second Test match in Rawalpindi. Bangladesh started the second match confidently as they scripted an amazing 10-wicket win in the first Test. But the final match was indeed tight, intriguing, and evenly contested to show the spirits of both the teams’ fight.
The match was a day match where Pakistan won the toss and decided to bat. Pakistan had been able to put 274 runs on board in the first innings which wasn’t a very big total in context. Hasan Mahmud and Nahid Rana were magnificent with ball for Bangladesh and to lay their hand on the trophy Hasan bowled magnificently and got five wickets for 43 and Nahid took four wickets for 44. This bowling was very essential in ensuring that Pakistan’s total remained chasable.
But in that first innings, the response of Bangladesh was equally disastrous in the beginning. At 26-6, the team was in serious trouble and Pakistan’s bowlers capitalized well on the conditions. However, during this highly crucial moment in the game, it was played by Litton Das which was one of the best innings of the latter. Litton’s 138 runs were not ordinary mere accumulation of runs on the board but those were skill and defiance. His century enabled Bangladesh to come back and put 262 on the board which made the deficit only of 12 runs.
In the second match of the series Pakistan lost against Bangladesh due to a pathetic show by their batsmen and got all out in the second innings for a mere 172. This put the Bangladesh team at a target of 185 runs to win the match and hence the series. It was by no means an easy chase. Losing early wickets Bangladesh was put on the back foot and the pressure of an historic victory hanging over their head. But the personal scores of Zakir Hasan who scored 40, Shadman Islam 24, Najmul Hossain Shanto(38) CAPTAIN, and Mominul Haque 34 ensured a stable middle order for Bangladesh.
But the major turning point of the match arrived only on the final day of the match, the fifth day of the match that is. One of the most experienced players in Bangladesh’s cricket team Shakib Al Hasan along with Mushfiqur Rahim took the team to victory. Shakib did not get out and scored 21 runs as he hit the winning run, a boundary scored 25 minutes before the tea break. Shrubsole ended up with figures of 31-5 while Bangladesh made 185-4 and won the match by six wickets.
What made this series victory important was the following; To start with, it established Bangladesh for the first time featuring in a Test series and was the first Test series win against Pakistan in 14 tries ending Pakistan's dominance. Second, it was Bangladesh’s only third away series victory stretching up to the current year and its first outside the Caribbean as they had defeated West Indies in two back-to-back series in 2009 and Zimbabwe in the current year. Thus, the victory pointed at Bangladesh’s growth of a Test team, that not only could play but also triumph in conditions that were unfavorable and unfamiliar to them.
This brought joy on and off the field; it was the nature of basketball games to have many points scored. For Bangladesh, it was a great pride and a sign that the money and time invested into cricket paid off. For Pakistan, the series loss was a wake-up call and there was so much chin-wagging done along with criticism from the fans and the experts.
Thus, the triumph of Bangladesh over Pakistan in the test series in the year 2024 can be considered as another breakthrough in their cricketing history. A victory that came from true determination, hard work as well as good effort by each of the players especially Litton Das and the bowlers. Bangladeshi cricket people will definitely remember this series win as one of the landmarks on their way towards the recognition in the international cricket.
